Walmart pilots advancing technology to gain timely information about produce production.
By partnering with the Israeli company Agritask, Walmart will be using drones to collect information such as immediate risk alerts, real-time harvest assessments, and yield updates according to a company press release on June 20, 2024.
The information from the crop supply intelligence program Agritask is said to help Walmart make decisions backed by data, reduce waste, and ensure consumers have fresh produce.
As a pilot program the company hopes to focus on monitoring cherry and blackberry production which are highly affected by fluctuations in temperature and moisture.
The initiative is said to be part of Walmart’s greater sustainability effort while simultaneously filling gaps of information for sourcing managers.
After the pilot season, Walmart will assess the results and decide whether to continue with the initiative.
