Nebraska’s agricultural landscape saw a dip in the number of farms and ranches in 2023, according to data released by the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

The report revealed that the state’s tally of farms and ranches stood at 44,400, marking a decrease of 100 from the previous year. Despite the overall decline, the number of operations with agricultural sales below $100,000 remained consistent with figures from 2022.

However, the data also indicated a notable reduction in operations generating $100,000 or more in agricultural sales, with a decline of 100 farms compared to the previous year.

Despite these shifts in farm numbers, the total land utilized for agricultural purposes in Nebraska remained steady at 44.0 million acres, consistent with figures from 2022. The average size of operations experienced a slight uptick, with each averaging 991 acres, an increase of 2 acres compared to the previous year.
