Large wildfire activity has continued in recent days in the southern Plains, Southwest, and Rocky Mountain areas. According to the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC), as of March 31, 41 large active wildfires have burned 154,887 acres this year, with 18 new starts reported on March 30. Oklahoma and Texas currently claim the vast majority of U.S. wildfires, with 27 actively burning in those states.
The North American Seasonal Fire Assessment and Outlook for March through May 2022 predicts above-normal potential for wildfire activity in the central and southern Plains, eastern slope of the Rockies, and expanded wildfire potential in the Southeast. Open report>>
