Leah Christen was recently selected as the senior Nebraska Beef Ambassador during the Beef Ambassador Contest and Beef Advocacy Training hosted by Nebraska Cattlemen.

Growing up on her family’s cow calf operation as a fifth-generation rancher is what Christen attributes to her passion for beef advocacy.

“Just always advocating how positive it is,” Christen said about how she hopes to promote the beef industry, “whether I’m talking about how good the nutritional facts of beef are or that producers are really trying their hardest to produce a safe and healthy product that’s good for the environment and for the consumers.”

Christen of Steinauer, NE, will attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln this fall to pursue a degree in agriculture education. She graduated from Lewiston Consolidated.

The Beef Ambassador Contest, held on June 12 this year, is split into two divisions: senior, which Christen was selected for, and collegiate. Awards for the winners include cash prizes and belt buckles. The collegiate Nebraska Beef Ambassador will also be awarded a scholarship at the end of their year on behalf of the Nebraska Cattlemen Research and Education Foundation.

The event’s organizers say this event allows students ages 14 to 24 to strengthen their advocacy skills and knowledge of key issues in the beef industry through a workshop, written response portion, and mock media interview.
