SUMNER, NE – Representatives from Dawson County Farm Bureau and Dawson County Cattlemen supplied area schools with donated beef from Tyson Foods on Monday, April 8, 2024, for the annual “Beef in Schools Day”.

The “Beef in Schools” program has been around for over 10 years and has continued the goal of bridging the gap for many students who are three to four generations removed from the farm or ranch and help inform and promote beef in the classroom.

All five Dawson County schools were supplied with the donated beef adding up to a total of 1,500 pounds. Representatives from Dawson County Farm Bureau and Dawson County Cattlemen joined students at Sumner-Eddyville-Miller Schools for lunch as they were served hot beef sundaes using the beef that was donated.

Dawson County Farm Bureau President Rob Stuart says this is a time for their organization and its partners to help educate area students about the benefits of beef.

Aside from the beef, materials and training were provided by Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation’s Agriculture in the Classroom Program. The Foundation and the Nebraska Farm Bureau work closely together to engage youth, educators, and the general public to promote an understanding of the vital importance of agriculture in the lives of all Nebraskans.

S-E-M Ag teacher Emily Reitz says this program has benefited the school and students in many ways.

S-E-M Head Nutritionist Sarah Scoville says the students love when the school receives more beef because it gives them a meal like it is homemade. She adds that it provides more variety for her when choosing meals for each day.
