13-year-old Liberty Cunningham is making a splash in the world of professional rodeo. The Kansas native has just begun her career as a specialty act for professional rodeos and high caliber western events.

Her trick riding career began when she was just eight years old, when her mom bought her trick riding lessons for Christmas. This year is her inaugural performance at the Hall of Fame Buffalo Bill Rodeo in North Platte. Cunningham says the Buffalo Bill Rodeo was the second professional rodeo committee to book her.

“This is a big rodeo and it is special to be here,” said Cunningham.

Cunningham’s act includes a mix of trick riding and roman riding with elements of dance sprinkled throughout the routine. After taking dance lessons for ten years and riding all of her life, Cunningham’s impressive performance feels like second nature. It didn’t take long for her to get used to combining the two activities.

“It was an easy adjustment,” Cunningham said.

Her horses, Blair, Elite, and Cletus play integral roles in her performances, and she looks forward to taking them as far as Washington later this summer.

Liberty shares her passion for horses and rodeo with her mom, Kara, and her sister, Lakin.

She will be in action the remainder of the week at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo with performances beginning at 8:00 pm central time through Saturday.
