HASTINGS – Despite hitting three home runs, the #1 seeded Guardian Angels Central Catholic softball team was upset 6-4 by #8 Central City in the opening round of the Class C State Tournament on Wednesday morning, Oct. 14 at the Smith Softball Complex in Hastings.
Brenna Rief led off the bottom of the first inning for the Bluejays with a solo homer that gave them an early 1-0 lead.
Then Jenna Schinstock and Aubrey Kreikemeier hit back-to-back home runs in the third, putting GACC up 3-0.
However, in the top of the fourth, Central City’s Karlee Seitz tied the game at 3-3 with a three-run home run of her own. The Bison went on to add two more runs in the inning, taking a 5-3 lead.
Kate Gnad led off the bottom of the 5th for GACC with a double. She later scored on a bunt from Leah Jansen, cutting the score to 5-4.
That’s what the score would remain until Central City added an insurance run in the top of the seventh, make it 6-4 Bison, which would go on to be the final.
Erin Franzluebbers took the pitching loss, allowing the six runs, five earned, on eight hits, two walks and a hit batter, while also recording 14 strike outs.
Eight different players had a hit for GACC with Rief, Schinstock and Aubrey Kreikemeier hitting home runs. Gnad an Brynn Baumert each had a double.
GACC now falls to the elimination bracket, where they will meet Auburn at 9:00 Thursday morning. The Bluejays could play as many as three games on Thursday, as they attempt to play their way back into the championship game.
