The dancers with the Repertory Dance Theatre will take the stage at the Midwest Theater on September 19th as the opening act of the 2019-2020 Performing Arts Season, and they will have a brand-new surface to perform on, thanks in part to the Oregon Trail Community Foundation.

OTCF granted $2,500 to Friends of the Midwest Theater to resurface the Midwest Theater stage and purchase roll-out vinyl stage covering known as “marley,” which is a requirement for professional dancers.

Midwest Theater Executive Director Billy Estes said that Midwest Theater’s stage was last resurfaced in 2008 and was in need of replacement.

“The stage surface was starting to splinter in places,” Estes said. “It was also getting hard to roll heavy equipment across some low spots that had developed. This new stage surface will be even more durable than the last replacement and will last a long time.”

The marley flooring is one more required performing arts resource that the Midwest Theater now has available to offer to the professional artists coming to western Nebraska from around the country.

“If a dance troupe didn’t travel with their own marley, we’ve had to drive down to Denver to rent it,” Estes said. “Having our own marley in-house, we’ll save money on rentals and travel costs and will be better able to attract professional dancers on a caliber equal to the Repertory Dance Theatre. It’s a pretty big deal that these dancers are coming to the Midwest Theater. They are the oldest and most successful repertory dance company in the country.”

The Repertory Dance Theatre will take the stage at the Midwest Theater on Thurs., Sept. 19, at 7:30 p.m. with a diverse range of modern dance styles and choreographers showcasing grace and athleticism, beauty and power.

Tickets for Repertory Dance Theatre are on sale now. Tickets are priced between $26-30 for members and $32-36 for non-members and may be purchased in the Midwest Theater office at 1707 Broadway, over the phone 308-632-4311, or online at midwesttheater.com.
