Annual United Way “Day of Caring” Food Packaging Event Tuesday

United Way of Western Nebraska held it’s annual Day of Caring Food Packaging event at the Weborg 21 Centre Tuesday morning.

Volunteers were working in stations of 10 people each in an assembly line manner with bulk food product being weighed, funneled into packages, sealed, labeled and boxed for delivery.

United Way of Western Nebraska Executive Director Steph Black told KNEB News this is their 7th year for doing the food packaging, and says the effort is even larger than last year.

Black says they had around 240 volunteers packaging 70,000 meals, which is 15,000 meals more than they packaged last year.

Black said the volunteers were made up of businesses, service organizations, students, and individuals.

She said the project funded solely through grants and donations that are specifically earmarked for the effort, and none of the annual campaign funds are used for the project, which Black says cost around $19,000 to put on.

Black says the food will be delivered this afternoon with the help of UPS, CAPWN and Potters Wheel to the local food pantries, school backpack programs, soup kitchens and other programs working to help alleviate hunger and food insecurity in our communities.
