Two Nebraska teams earned silver medals at the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) Certified Angus Beef Cook-Off competition that was held in Grand Island on July 13, 2021.

Nebraska NJAA members won second place in the junior steak division with their dish, “Caldron Steak Fondue,” and second place in the intermediate steak division with their dish, “Big Red Sirloin” at the competition.

The Junior Steak Team consisted of Daniel Young, Scottsbluff; Attley Wiese and Mckinley Stoller, both of Palisade; Wyatt Smith, Osceola; Payton Scott, Gordon; and Kreyton Wiese, Palisade.

The Intermediate Steak Team consisted of Rachel Smith, Osceola; Addison Cotton, York; Tavin Uden, Franklin; JessaLynn Hudson, Belvidere; and Kacey Dethlefs, Ravenna.

The contest was founded in 1983, in Des Moines, Iowa, to encourage Angus juniors to practice their beef education skills.

Today, it is one of the biggest contests of the NJAS. Participants are encouraged to have a theme for their presentation that includes costumes and a delicious meal.

For the beef portion of the contest, participants are tasked with creating a dish with CAB branded beef in one of three categories: steak, roast or other beef items.

During the 2021 contest, over 33 teams competed for the Black Kettle Award also known as the overall team, among all age groups.
