UPDATE June 9th: Charges were amended to Attempted Assault on an Officer, Flight to Avoid Arrest, Obstructing a Police Officer and Willful Reckless Driving. The original count of Attempted Motor Vehicle Homicide was dismissed.

A 53-year-old man will be arraigned in Gosper County Court Friday morning on multiple charges in connection with a pursuit Wednesday evening.    Jeffrey Martin of Charlotte, TN faces charges of Attempted Assault on an Officer,  Attempted Motor Vehicle Homicide, Flight to Avoid Arrest, Obstructing a Peace Officer and Willful Reckless Driving.

Around 6:10pm Wednesday, Gosper County Sheriff Jesse Naputi attempted a traffic stop on a Dodge Charger in Elwood that was reported earlier as being involved in racing with another vehicle.   An arrest affidavit says the Charger continued southbound  out of Elwood on Highway 283 reaching speeds in excess of 105 mph.  The Charger passed several vehicles and semi trailers on the highway then stopped in the center of the southbound lane about 4 miles north of Arapahoe.   The vehicle turned around and drove in the same lane as the approaching Sheriff’s vehicle and Sheriff Naputi had to perform an evasive maneuver to avoid a head-on collision.

The suspect vehicle continued northbound on Highway 283 for about four miles before it stopped again in the center of the Highway and blocked both traffic lanes.  The suspect, Jeffrey Martin, then got out of the vehicle and began yelling and flailing his arms in a menacing manner.  Despite repeated instructions by Sheriff Naputi,  Martin refused to comply and a taser was then deployed to assist in taking him into custody,

Martin is being held in the Dawson County Jail.
