State Volleyball Recap, Sutton takes Class C2 runner-up

The Sutton Fillies upset two of the top-three seeds during the 2021 NSAA State Volleyball Tournament in Lincoln. Sutton first took on the #3 seed Clarkson-Leigh in the first round and won in five sets 25-21, 17-25, 17-25, 25-19, 15-6. Alivia Huxoll led the way with 20 kills in the match for Sutton.

The Fillies then took on the #2 seed Wisner-Pilger in the finals. Just like the first round game, the Fillies found themselves trailing 2-1 in sets. Sutton won 21-25, 25-17, 17-25, 25-17, 15-13. The win put the Fillies in their first-ever state championship game in school history.

They took on the top-overall seed in Class C2, Oakland-Craig. Saturday’s championship at the Devaney Center in Lincoln went all Oakland-Craig’s way, as they won in a sweep 25-21, 25-20, 27-25. Sutton was led by Reagan Vavricek with 11 kills and Huxoll finished with eight kills. The Fillies end their season at 27-7.

Other state champions included Class A’s Papillion-La Vista stayed undefeated at 40-0 with a win over Millard West in three sets. In Class B, top-seed Norris lost to #3 seed Omaha Skutt in four sets. Class C1 top-seed Lincoln Lutheran swept Kearney Catholic for the title. In Class D1, #1 seed Howells-Dodge won in four sets over #3 seed Archbishop Bergan, and in Class D2 Sacred Heart won in five sets over #3 seed St. Francis.
