North Platte Police have issued a citation to a Thedford woman for 6 counts of Animal Cruelty.  It stems from an investigation that started on June 2, 2022 when officers were asked to check the welfare of several animals.  The complainant said they had not seen the owner of the animals for several days and knew that there were animals being kept inside a camper on the property.   Officers learned that the complainant had checked on the animals in the camper and found several of them deceased and the others to be in less than favorable living conditions.

Upon arrival to a residential area in the 1900 block of North Sheridan Street, officers located four rabbits which were deceased outside of the camper.  Officers also located several snakes,  including 6 pythons and a boa constrictor, inside the camper.  One of the pythons was deceased and the others were found to be in poor health with no food or water.

During the investigation, Officers learned that the owner of the animals, 29-year-old Shelby Vargas, had not been seen in several days and that the camper where the animals were kept, had no electricity.  Officers confirmed that the 4 deceased rabbits had previously been domesticated and had been living inside the camper.   The remaining snakes were placed in the care of a local citizen with experience in snake care.

On June 17, Officers located Vargas and issued her a citation for 6 counts of Animal Cruelty.
