Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts stood with beef industry advocates in downtown Lincoln on Wednesday as he made his proclamation of May as “Beef Month.”

Standing in Misty’s Steakhouse, Ricketts also endorsed a new “beef passport” program to promote meat-eating across the state. The popular Lincoln restaurant is one of over 40 locations that participants can receive a stamp for visiting.

The program works similarly to the Nebraska Passport Program. Participants will need to visit restaurants on the list and order beef items off their menu. Then, people will earn stamps from the various locations and submit their passports to the Nebraska Beef Council for a chance to win prizes.

Ricketts cast meat as essential to the state’s economy and the nation’s food security. He criticized “radical environmentalists” and Bill Gates for promoting alternatives, such as synthetic, lab-grown meat, and for arguing that the global meat production system isn’t sustainable.

In Nebraska, cattle outnumber people nearly 4 to 1. According to the Nebraska Beef Council, the state has the top three beef cow counties in the U.S., including the nation’s No. 1 cow county – Cherry County, with nearly 166,000 cows. Custer County is No. 2 (100,000) and Holt County is No. 3 (99,000). Also among the top counties is Lincoln County at No. 12 (69,000).
