Lincoln, Neb. — Debate began Tuesday on a contentious bill that would ban
gender-affirming care for minors that was the genesis of a nearly three-week
filibuster carried out by a lawmaker opposed to the proposal.

Nebraska Unicameral

Omaha Sen. Machaela Cavanaugh had followed through on a vow to filibuster every bill before
the Nebraska Legislature until late last week, when an agreement was struck to
debate the bill at the center of her protest. Cavanaugh says that if the bill
advances on a vote expected Thursday, she will resume effort to slow the body’s
work to a crawl.

Omaha Sen. Kathleen Kauth’s, “Let Them Grow Act,” would ban the use of gender-altering procedures for individuals under age 19. Kauth says she introduced the bill to protect children from making permanent decisions too early in their lives.
