Walking into the National Ranching Heritage Center (NRHC) in Lubbock, Texas is like walking into another time period.

The center, located on Texas Tech University’s campus, is an arm of the Ranching Heritage Association, a member-ran organization that exists to preserve the physical, social, and cultural aspects of ranching.

Jim Bret Campbell, Executive Director of the NRHC says that the history of ranching and the west is of interest to people of all backgrounds.

“There’s something about the cowboy hat that resonates with people from Dallas to Beijing,” Campbell said.

The center is located on 17 acres and features exhibits ranging from “The History of Cattle Breeds,” to an exhibit exploring the land management benefits of prescribed burns. Volunteers at the center dress up in clothing fitting to the time period and give guided tours around the various outbuildings at the park.

Learn more about the National Ranching Heritage Center and its mission in this week’s episode of Breaking the Barrier featuring NRHC Executive Director Jim Bret Campbell and hosted by Rebel Sjeklocha.
