Milford, Osceola end seasons in Lincoln

LINCOLN – The first round of the NSAA Boys state basketball tournament took place on Wednesday at Pinnacle Bank Arena and various other high school sites around the capital city.

First in Class D2, the Osceola Bulldogs (20-7) found their way to Lincoln for the first time in 33 years. They took on the top-seed St. Marys Cardinals (23-2). Osceola held St. Marys close through one quarter, but the Cardinals started to expand the lead by making a buzzer-beating shot at halftime, and scoring 26 points in the fourth quarter to pull ahead and finish with the win 62-50.

Osceola sophomore Isaiah Zelasney scored a team-high 14 points, while freshman Kale Gustafson added 13. Junior Wyatt Urban put up 11 points. St. Marys was led by their star junior Aiden Hedstrom who had 21.

In Class C1, the undefeated No.5 seed Milford Eagles took on the No. 4 seed Omaha Concordia Mustangs. The Eagles owned the first quarter taking a 20-11 lead, but the Mustangs started to figure out Milford from there. In the second quarter, Omaha Concordia scored 15 points, while holding Milford to just three and had a 26-23 lead at the half. The Eagles were also held to just five points in the third quarter, and the Mustangs expanded the lead to 42-28 after three quarters and they wouldnt look back, finishing the game off with a 66-54 win over the Eagles.

Milford suffered their first loss of the 2020-21 season and ends with a record 26-1. Omaha Concordia moves on to the second round in its first-ever season at the state tournament.  Milford Junior Seth Stutzman scored a game-high 26 points, junior Jaxon Weyand had 11, and junior Micah Hartwig had 10. Mustangs junior guard Zach Kulus finished with 17 points.
