McKenna Yates and her McCool Junction Mustang teammates jumped out to a 10-0 lead and never looked back, as they clinched a berth at the state girls basketball tournament, with a decisive 82-57 win over Pleasanton in the Class D2-5 district final Saturday evening in McCool.

Yates drained eight three-pointers in the contest, on the way to a game high 39 points. The Mustangs led 37-20 at halftime, and continued the offensive onslaught after the break with a 45-point second half.

In addition to the offensive fireworks by Yates, two other Mustangs hit double figures for the game – Shelby Bandt scored 17, while Claire Brugger added 12 points. The Mustangs, now 24-2 on the year, will return to the state tournament for the first time since 2003. Pleasanton senior Regan Weisdorfer started slow in her final game, but never gave up, as she tallied 26 points before fouling out in the final period. With the loss, Pleasanton finishes the season 15-9.

McCool Junction’s first round opponent is Humphrey St. Francis at 10:45 AM Thursday from Pinnacle Bank Arena. The game will be broadcasted live on KOOL 103.5 FM, 1370 AM and 95.9 FM.
