York, Neb. — A fourth fatality crash in York County along Highway 34 in a little over a month has York County Sheriff Paul Vrbka searching for answers.

The latest tragic crash Wednesday at 11 a.m., at the intersection of Highways 81 and 34 on the west side of York claimed the life of 65 year old Lucille Kennedy of Exeter.

Kennedy’s vehicle was eastbound on Highway 34 when it entered the intersection and crashed with a semi proceeding down Highway 81.

The Sheriff’s Office said it didn’t appear the semi driver, who hasn’t been identified, was seriously injured.

Sheriff Vrbka says three people were killed in an accident at the East Highway 34/81 Junction in late May; a motorcyclist was killed in an accident on Highway 34 at the intersection with Road P on July 4; a man was killed Tuesday, July 9, on Highway 34 near the entrance to the York Municipal Airport; followed by the latest fatal accident Wednesday that killed Lucille Kennedy.

Sheriff Vrbka says he has reached out to District 24 State Senator Jana Hughes to see if the state can provide some safety features or equipment for the Highway 34/81 intersection as there have been multiple accidents at that location since the Highway 81 bypass was created around York. Sheriff Vrbka says he hopes to meet with Senator Hughes in the very near future “To see what can be done.” He says, “We can’t keep having accidents like this.”
