CRC Basketball first round completed, second round continues Monday

YORK – On Saturday, the York City Auditorium and York College’s Freeman Center were full of area Crossroads Conference teams for the first round of action. Ten girls and boys teams competed, and the second rounds will continue on 104.9 Max Country today. A webstream link is available from Striv TV, at striv.tv/crc.

First-round CRC boys:

(8) High Plains 48, (9) Meridian 37

High Plains took control during a 15-2 run through most of the third quarter and early in the 4th quarter en route to a 48-37 win over Meridian in the first round of the 2022 Crossroads Tournament.  Cole Swanson paced the Storm (8-7) with 15 points, while Lane Urkoski tallied 10. In a losing effort, Kolton Kumpf scored 15 points for the Mustangs (7-9). High Plains now advances to the quarterfinals, where they’ll take on No. 1 seed Osceola on Monday at 4:30 pm. 

(5) Nebraska Lutheran 59, (12) Hampton 39

The Nebraska Lutheran Knights jumped out to a 25-5 first-quarter lead, led 42-15 at the half, and were never threatened, as they rolled over the Hampton Hawks 59-39 at the York College Freeman Center. Lutheran (10-3) was led by Trey Richert’s 13 points, while Jace Dressel added 11 in the victory. Drake Schafer and Tyson Wolinski scored 9 apiece for the Hawks (3-11).

(4) Shelby-Rising City 50, (13) Dorchester 22

The Shelby-Rising City Huskies punched their ticket to the quarterfinals with a dominating 50-22 win over the Dorchester Longhorns. Gavin Dutton-Mofford hit four three-pointers in the first half, as the Huskies opened up a 28-9 lead by intermission. The scoring pace slowed in the second half, but the Huskies had no trouble maintaining a comfortable advantage throughout the contest. Gavin Dutton-Mofford finished with 22 points for Shelby-Rising City (8-7), while Blake Hansen scored 8 for Dorchester (3-11).

(6) McCool Junction 51, (11) Giltner 44

The Mustangs were led by Isaac Stark who scored 15 points in the second half to guide McCool Junction to a 51-44 win over the Giltner Hornets. Jake Hoarty added 12 points for the Mustangs, and Mapieu Kuochinin scored 10. Jacob Smith led the Hornets with 16 points. Giltner drops to 3-13 with the loss, McCool Junction moves to 7-7, and a second-round game with BDS coming up on Tuesday.

(7) Exeter-Milligan 54, (10) East Butler 39

The Exeter-Milligan Timberwolves led early over East Butler and would not look back in the 54-39 win over the Tigers. Draven Payne led E-M with four three-pointers en route to leading the team with 14 points. Alex Pierce for East Butler scored 18 points in the loss. The Timberwolves move on to play Cross County in the second round on Monday. East Butler with the loss drops to 6-9 on the season.

Monday’s games: (1) Osceola vs. (8) High Plains at 4:30 pm at York City Auditorium and (7) Exeter-Milligan vs. (2) Cross County at 7:30 pm at YCA.

Tuesday’s games: (5) Nebraska Lutheran vs. (13) Shelby-Rising City at 4:30 p.m. at YCA and (3) BDS vs. (6) McCool Junction at 7:30 pm. All games are on Max Country and Striv TV.

First-round CRC girls:

(9) East Butler 58, (8) Hampton 40

The East Butler Tigers beat the Hampton Hawks by 18 in the first CRC girls game. The Tigers led 14-7 at the end of the first quarter and pulled away before halftime. Lanae Aerts led East Butler with 19 and Nicole Buresh had 15. Zaya Stuart led Hampton with 15 points and junior Lillian Dose had 12. East Butler with the win moves on to play top-girls seed Cross County at 3 p.m. on Monday.

(5) McCool Junction 58, (12) Giltner 32

The McCool Junction girls picked up their 11th win of the season with a first-round CRC win over Giltner. McKenna Yates led the Lady Mustangs in scoring with 21. Giltner’s Maci Antle added 16 points to lead her team. McCool Junction’s win moves them to a Tuesday second-round matchup with BDS.

(4) BDS 46, (13) Nebraska Lutheran 17

BDS went on an 18-1 run through most of the first half and never looked back on its way to a 46-17 win in the first round of the Crossroads Conference Tournament over Nebraska Lutheran. The Eagles (14-3) move into the quarterfinals to face McCool Junction Tuesday at 3 p.m. with the victory, their 10th straight since dropping three in a row in mid-December. Jessalynn Hudson and Mallory Hudson paced the BDS scoring effort with eight points each, while Ashley Schlegel added seven points and Hannah Miller added 6. Rebecca Hueske led the Knights (3-11) with six points. 

(6) Exeter-Milligan 38, (11) Shelby-Rising City 26

The first-round matchup between Exeter Milligan and Shelby-Rising City went the way of the Timberwolves. The game was tied 5-5 after the first quarter before the Timberwolves outscored the Huskies 15-6 to take the 20-11 lead into the half. Shelby-Rising City cut into the lead by one after the third quarter before the Exeter-Milligan outscored the Huskies by four in the fourth to take the 38-26 win. Next up for Exeter-Milligan is a matchup vs. Osceola on Tuesday, the tip is set for 6 on. Shelby-Rising City is now off until February 1.

(10) Dorchester 31, (7) High Plains 26

The final game of the first day of the 2022 girls’ CRC between the High Plains Storm and the Dorchester Longhorns saw Dorchester win a thriller. The game never had a separation of more than a possession or two with High Plains leading at the half 17-16. The third quarter saw the Longhorns finally get a lead after the buzzer sounded taking a 23-22 lead into the fourth quarter. The final frame was memorable with Dorchester down two in the final seconds and hitting the game-winner as time expired to pull off a memorable 31-30 win over High Plains. Freshman Baylor Behrens knocked in the three that would win it. Dorchester with the win will move on to play two-seed Meridian on Monday night.

Monday’s games: (1) Cross County vs. (9) East Butler at 3 p.m. at York City Auditorium and (2) Meridian vs. (10) Dorchester at 6 p.m. at YCA.

Tuesday’s games: (5) McCool Junction vs. (4) BDS at 3 p.m at YCA and (3) Osceola vs. (6) Exeter-Milligan at 6 p.m at YCA. All games are on Max Country and Striv TV.
