Coaches With Nebraska Ties On HOF Ballot

A couple of former Huskers are on the College Football Hall Of Fame Ballot this summer. Former Nebraska Head Coach Frank Solich is once again included on the ballot. This is Coach Solich’s second year on the ballot and he is one of nine Football Bowl Subdivision coaches on the ballot.
Solich earned a spot on the ballot for the second consecutive year. During his 22 seasons as a head coach, Solich compiled a record of 173-101, including a 58-19 record in six seasons as Nebraska’s head coach from 1998 to 2003, followed by 115 wins as the head coach at Ohio University.

Solich led the Huskers to the 1999 Big 12 Conference championship. NU added a co-Big 12 North Division title in 2001, when the Huskers met Miami in the Rose Bowl for the national championship. The Huskers finished No. 3 in the AP Poll in 1999 after beating Tennessee in the Fiesta Bowl and rolling to a 22-6 win over Texas in the Big 12 Championship Game.

Former Kearney State ( UNK) head coach Al Zikmund is also on the ballot. His teams won 11 conference titles. Nine of his players were named NAIA All-Americas and 67 made All-Conference, Zikmund’s teams won 122 games during his tenure and had 79 percent winning percentage which is the best in school history. Zikmund played at Nebraska in the early 1940’s lettering in from 1940-1942. He was selected by the Chicago Bears in the 1943 NFL Draft.
