June 1st, 2023 | Jon Schilling

Holdrege, Neb. – The Holdrege Farm Bureau Seniors were finally able to get an elusive win over rival Broken Bow on Wednesday night. Holdrege won 10-2 in the five-inning game thanks to timely hitting and limited mistakes.

Despite a strong first inning from Broken Bow starter Max Denson, Holdrege was able to break through in the second with four runs. Elijah Bergstrom jump-started the Farm Bureau offense with an RBI double that sent Keagan Steinke home. Holdrege was then able to take advantage of some mistakes to increase their lead to four.

The Farm Bureau defense took care of the rest, as they were able to ride another strong start from pitcher Beau Jensen. Jensen allowed only one earned run off of one hit in four and two-thirds innings of work. Cole Guthrie finished things off in a brief appearance in relief. After a five-run fourth inning, Holdrege was able to put Broken Bow away in the fifth thanks to a walk-off single delivered by Zac Sundquist.

Overall, Farm Bureau was able to put together a solid effort and get their first over Broken Bow in at least three years. Holdrege limited the errors, committing only one in the game. They improved to 2-3 on the season.

Broken Bow appeared to be on their way to another tough showing. Denson started on the mound and looked almost unhittable. The hard-throwing left-hander showed an impressive amount of movement and control, but Holdrege was able to find just enough of an opening to break through. Broken Bow’s record fell to 2-4.

Sundquist was able to get his first hits of the season on Wednesday. He finished 2-4 with two RBIs and scored one run, earning himself the Husker Irrigation Player of the Game.

Farm Bureau will travel to McCook on Thursday night before coming back home on Friday to host Kearney Jersey’s. Friday’s game can be heard on KUVR with the Green Landscapes Pregame Show beginning at 7:50 pm.
