Holdrege High School ready for ‘Winter Madness’
November 17th, 2022 | Jon Schilling

The Duster Dome is opening early this year ahead of the 2022-2023 winter sports season. The past few weeks have been busy at Holdrege High as planning for the new event has been ongoing. Winter Madness will offer a chance for the community to get a sneak-peak at a number of Duster athletics and activities. On display will be the boys and girls basketball teams, the wrestling team, the cheer squad, and the Twisters dance team.

Winter Madness will start at 5:45 on Friday, November 18 in the high school gym and is free and open to the public. In addition to the students showing off their skills and preparation, there will be a number of games for kids in attendance, free giveaways, and a “$1 Dinner Night.”

The full itinerary for the night will start off with cheer and dance routines followed by an introduction of everyone involved. After the pregame show, the wrestlers will have their presentation. The night will continue with a youth dunk contest, a Duster student “knockout” competition, and the girls basketball presentation. Duster parents will then be invited to come out for a half-court shooting contest followed by a youth “hot spot” shooting contest. The night will finish with the boys basketball presentation, a Twisters dance performance, and a three-point shooting contest.

Derek Runcie, head coach of the Duster girls basketball team, has been hard at work planning the event. “It’s a great opportunity to showcase everybody. That’s the whole point, we want to showcase every activity,” Runcie said. He hopes it’ll be a fun opportunity for the community to get a look at the preparation behind the scenes.
