The West Point City Council accepted a bid of just over $7 million from Christiansen Construction in Pender for the new swimming pool at Thursday night’s Special Meeting. City Administrator Tom Goulette says there was some cost savings involved with the bid.
Goulette says the total was $294,137.
Construction is expected to start right away and be done in October of 2023.
Goulette says this means there will be no swimming season in West Point next year.
The council was split 3-3 for yes and no to the bid with councilmen Mark Buse, Jerry Hugo, and Tom Swenson saying yes, but councilmen Rusty Smith, Ryan Penrose, and Shea Stokely opposing. Mayor Bruce Schlecht had the final say and broke the tie by saying yes, thus approving the bid.
The Council also considered a grant from the Land and Water Conservation Fund. Goulette says work is underway for acquiring that grant.
Goulette says there are a couple of other grants the city plans to pursue, including one from the Daugherty Foundation and another from the CCCFF.
This is in addition to the $1.5 million grant the city received from the Nielsen Foundation.
