Roden and Tebrake Claim BIG EAST Player and Pitcher of the Year

Mason, Ohio — On the eave of the BIG EAST Tournament, Creighton Baseball plucked two of the largest individual honors as junior Dylan Tebrake and sophomore Alan Roden were named BIG EAST Pitcher and BIG EAST Co-Player of the Year on Wednesday, May 25.

Five Bluejays were recognized in total as junior Jared Wegner was unanimously chosen to the All-BIG EAST First Team, while juniors Andrew Meggs and Tommy Steier earned All-BIG EAST Second Team honors.

After claiming the honor in 2021, Tebrake repeated as the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year this season. Tebrake closed the regular season with an 8-2 record, including a 5-1 mark in BIG EAST action. The Minnesota native posted a 2.58 ERA over 87.1 innings, striking out 108 hitters and allowing just 27 walks. Tebrake limited the opposition to a .207 batting average throughout the season. In seven starts during BIG EAST action, Tebrake posted a 2.66 ERA over 47.1 innings with 65 strikeouts and 11 walks. In addition to earning the second consecutive BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year, Tebrake was a unanimous All-BIG EAST First Team selection.

The preseason BIG EAST Player of the Year, Roden more than met the challenge. The Wisconsin native closed the regular season with a conference best .394 average. He led Creighton with 71 hits, led the Bluejays as well as the BIG EAST with 24 doubles and was second on the team with 42 RBI. Drawing 28 walks this season, Roden has a .606 slugging percentage, a .502 on-base percentage and also swiped nine bases (9-of-14).

Tebrake is the first pitcher to earn the award in consecutive seasons since the BIG EAST realigned in 2014, while Roden became the third Bluejay to earn the BIG EAST Player of the Year. The previous Player of the Year winners were Jake Holton (2019) and Reagan Fower (2014), while Mitch Ragan claimed the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year honor in 2019.

Wegner leads Creighton with 11 home runs and 52 RBI over 46 contest. The Nebraska native also has a team-high .649 slugging percentage, leads Creighton with three triples, is second on the team with a .345 average and second with 14 doubles. In BIG EAST action Wegner is even better with a .363 average, 29 hits, eight doubles, five home runs and 29 RBI.

Creighton’s leadoff hitter, Meggs finished the regular season third on the team with a .325 average, second with 65 hits, and is tied for the team lead with 46 runs scored. The California native has also collected three home runs and 25 RBI, while walking 23 times. In BIG EAST contests Meggs’ numbers rose to .352 with a team-best 25 runs scored and 12 RBI. Meggs was also an All-BIG EAST Second Team selection in 2020.

Fifth in the NCAA in ERA, Steier has a 1.55 mark over 52.1 innings. Tommy has made 24 appearances this season, collecting a 3-1 record with eight saves. He has held opponents to just a .199 average, recording 45 strikeouts. In 11 BIG EAST contests, Steier recorded four saves and a 1-1mark over 19.2 innings.

The second-seed in the BIG EAST Tournament, the Bluejays are set to open against third-seeded Xavier on Thursday, May 26 at 6:30 pm.
