Pender Seniors Down Wakefield for C-2 Area Title

SCRIBNER – The Pender Seniors American Legion Baseball Team is headed back to the State Tournament as they downed Wakefield 13-5 in 6 innings in the C-2 Area District Championship Game held in Scribner and aired on 107.9 the Bull Tuesday night.

Pender scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning and tree runs in the bottom of the second to take a 5-0 lead.

Wakefield then made a pitching change, pulling starter Jakobe Mahone, and bringing in Johnny Berkley.

Wakefield scored for the first time in the top of the fourth inning, adding a run to make the score 5-1.

Pender starting pitcher Zach Hegge threw 5 1/3 innings before he was replaced by Nathan Breitbarth with one out in the sixth inning.

Wakefield scored six runs in the top of the sixth to tie the game at 5-5.

Pender responded in the home half of the inning, scoring 8 runs, and ending the game due to the mercy rule, with the final score favoring Pender 13-5.

Breitbarth had four hits for pender, a double, three singles and two RBIs. Spencer Rabbass added a pair of hits and two RBIs.

Hegge and Breitbarth combined in the pitching win for Pender.

Pender will now take part in the Class C State Tournament, which starts on Saturday in Palmer.
