Moo drop series finale to Sodbusters

Hastings, Nebraska – The Hastings Sodbusters handed the Fremont Moo a 14-4 defeat Thursday night at Duncan Field. Hastings won the final two games of the three game series.

After a scoreless first inning, Fremont plated three runs in the top of the second. Against Hastings starter Cohen Evans, Fremont’s Isaac Bonner led off with a single. Two batters later, Grant Nottleman was hit by a pitch. Two wild pitches would eventually bring Bonner around to score, making it 1-0. After Jack Torosian drew a walk, Carson Burnett doubled, scoring Nottleman, to make it a 2-0 Fremont lead. The next batter, Carter Sintek, grounded out to short, scoring Torosian, and Fremont led 3-0.

The Sodbusters responded by scoring two runs in the bottom of the second. With one out against Fremont starter Tyson Romero, Yamato Sato singled. Then, Tyler Walsh recorded a hit and Alexiel Delgado doubled, scoring Sato, to make it 3-1. The next batter, Drew Vega, grounded out to second, scoring Welsh, to make it a 3-2 game.

Fremont plated a run in the top of the third. Parker Mooney led off with a walk. Then, Kayden Anderson drew a walk, which forced The Sodbusters to go to the bullpen and bring in Braden Cork. Two batters later, Miles Meadows reached on an error, allowing Mooney to score, making it 4-2, Fremont.

Hastings tied the game in the bottom of the third. Sawyer Duddleston led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch. Two batters later, Josh Prinner singled. After a strikeout by Romero for the second out, Yamato Sato was hit by a pitch, to load the bases. Then, Tyler Welsh hit a two-rbi single, scoring Duddleston and Prinner, to make it a 4-4 game.

The Sodbusters kept Fremont off the board the remainder of the night, plus got the offense clicking. With one out in the bottom of the fourth, Ryan Jarvis singled. Then, Sawyer Duddleston and Kale Jensen followed with singles to load the bases. The next batter, Josh Prinner, hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Jarvis, to make it 5-4, Hastings.

In the sixth, Hastings sent eleven batters to the plate and scored six runs. Against Fremont reliever Brandt Phillips, Drew Vega led off with a walk. Then, Ryan Jarvis singled. Sawyer Duddleston walked, to load the bases. Vega scored on a wild pitch, making it 6-4. Kale Jensen singled, scoring Jarvis, to make it 7-4. Josh Prinner knocked in Duddleston with a hit, to make it 8-4. Bryce Ronken reached on an error by Kayden Anderson at shortstop, to load the bases. Then, Yamato Sato drew a bases loaded walk, to make it 9-4. Tyler Welsh did the same, pushing it to a 10-4 game. Fremont went to the bullpen and brought in Grant Wagner to pitch. The first batter he faced, Alexiel Delgado, hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Ronken, to make it an 11-4, Sodbusters lead.

Hastings added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh. Sawyer Duddleston led off with a walk. Kale Jensen did the same, putting runners at first and second. Josh Prinner hit a grounder to short, which forced out Jensen at second, leaving runners at first and third. A wild pitch scored Duddleston to make it 12-4. Prinner stole second, then took third. Then, Bryce Ronken hit an rbi single, plating Prinner, to make it 13-4, Hastings.

In the bottom of the eighth, Hastings’ Alexiel Delgado led off with a single. Drew Vega hit into a 5-4-3 ground out double play, which emptied the bases. Then, Ryan Jarvis singled. The next batter, Sawyer Duddleston, hit a fly ball to center, which was dropped by Miles Meadows, and Jarvis scored to make it 14-4.

In the top of the ninth, Cork got Jack Torosian to ground out and struck out Trey Brooks, however, Brooks advanced to first on a wild pitch. Cork responded and struck out Tyrus Petsche, then got Bridger Coleman to ground out to first for the final out of the game.

Hastings (25-18, 10-10) scored fourteen runs off fifteen hits and committed one error. Fremont (26-17, 13-6) scored four runs off six hits and had three errors.

Sodbusters starter Cohen Evans pitched 2.0 innings, giving up four runs off three hits, struck out one, walked five, had two wild pitches and hit one batter. Braden Cork (2-2) earned the win. He pitched 7.0 innings, giving up no runs off three hits, struck out five, walked one and had one wild pitch. 

Fremont starter Tyson Romero (0-1) took the loss. He pitched 5.0 innings, giving up five runs off nine hits, struck out three, walked one and hit three batters. Brandt Phillips faced eight batters and did not record an out. He gave up five earned runs off three hits, walked four and had one wild pitch. Grant Wagner pitched 3.0 innings, giving up two earned runs off three hits, struck out one and walked two and had two wild pitches.

Offensively for Hastings, Ryan Jarvis was 3-for-5. Kale Jensen was 2-for-4 with an rbi. Josh Prinner was 2-for-5 and drove in one run. Bryce Ronken was 1-for-5 with an rbi. Tyler Welsh went 2-for-3 with three rbi’s. Alexiel Delgado was 3-for-5 and drove in two.

For Fremont, Carson Burnett was 1-for-3 with an rbi. Carter Sintek was 2-for-5 and drove in two runs.

Hastings has Friday off and will host The Bison, Saturday night.

Fremont begins its final homestand of the year, Friday night, hosting The Nebraska Prospects. First pitch at Historic Moller Field is 7:05 p.m.
