MINNEAPOLIS – Iowa State (8-3) wrapped up non-conference play Saturday night, falling 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-20) to No. 11 Minnesota (5-3) at Maturi Pavilion.

The match was a struggle for the Cyclone attack, who hit just .071 as a team in the match, with the Gophers getting 11.0 total blocks on the night. In defeat, ISU was led by Eleanor Holthaus, who had eight kills, 12 digs and four blocks. Candelaria Herrera added seven kills and five blocks, while Marija Popovic led the back-row with 14 digs.

Set One: Minnesota 25 Iowa State 17
Iowa State converted its first four shots for kills, helping the visitors get ahead 5-2. The Gophers struggled in attack, committing three attack errors, none of which came via a Cyclone block, that allowed the ISU advantage to half-a-dozen at 11-5. Minnesota claimed five-straight to get within one at 11-10, and move ahead for the first time at 13-12 on a Candelaria Herrera attack error. The two sides briefly traded the lead, but the home team was able to get ahead for good with a 4-0 run, capped by a Gopher block of Herrera at 19-15. The Cyclone attack faded as the set went along, hitting just .105 for the first frame. Minnesota took the final five points of the set, with Jenna Wenaas killing from the back row at 25-17.

Set Two: Minnesota 25 Iowa State 19
The visitors got off to another good start, with Alexis Engelbrecht stuffing a setter dump attempt to put ISU ahead 6-4. Defense dominated the early portions of the set, with Iowa State getting five blocks after being shutout in the first set while the Gophers added four. ISU finally got back ahead two at 17-15 after two kills in three points by Kenzie Mantz, but the home team quickly retaliated to move back in front with a 6-0 run, with Engelbrecht mis-timing a shot at 21-17 UM. The ISU attack struggled, recording just six kills in the second and hitting -.042 in the frame. Minnesota moved ahead 2-0 on a Taylor Baranski service error at 25-19.

Set Three: Minnesota 25 Iowa State 20
The Gophers claimed the first five points of the set, and did not look back. Minnesota converted its first four shots of the frame for kills, building the lead to five at 12-7. ISU held tough, with Herrera killing to get ISU back within a point at 13-12, but struggled to take the next step to tie or move ahead again. The Gopher lead was down to one again at 21-20 when Mantz killed in the seam, but the visitors could not make the final step to tie the set. While the Cyclone attack hit .171 in the set, their best of the match, the Gophers counted at .279, their best of the night, and finished things off with a Wenaas kill at 25-20.
