STILLWATER, Okla. – Izaiah Brockington scored 26 points, including Iowa State’s final two baskets in overtime, to lead the No. 23 Cyclones (15-5, 3-5 Big 12) to a thrilling 84-81 win over Oklahoma State (10-9, 3-5 Big 12) Wednesday night in Stillwater.
Brockington, who recorded his seventh 20-point game of the season, was the catalyst all night, answering the bell when the Cyclones needed it in a see-saw affair featuring 28 lead changes and 15 ties.
It was a sweet victory, as the Cyclones ended a 24-game Big 12 road losing streak along the way.
Brockington, who also made the deciding basket to force overtime, received help from Tyrese Hunter and Caleb Grill. Hunter, who had five key points in the extra session, netted 18 points and Grill poured in 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting from downtown.
The Cyclones drilled 12 3-pointers, one shy from their season high.
Avery Anderson III led the Cowboys with a career-high 34 points, including 27 after intermission.
Both teams made over half of their shots in the opening period, as the Cowboys clung to a one-point lead at the break, 35-34. Brockington had 14 points in the opening period.
The leads continued to exchange throughout the midway point of the second half, as the game was knotted at 51-51 after a Grill corner trey.
Anderson’s 3-pointer and pair of free throws gave the Cowboys a 65-61 advantage with under five minutes remaining, but Brockington buried a trey and two more buckets to tie the game at 68-68 with two minutes on the clock.
Brockington then hit a big stepback jumper with 20 seconds left to tie the game (70-70) and eventually force overtime.
In overtime, Brockington hit his third trey to give the Cyclones an 80-76 lead with 1:50 left, but Rondel Walker answered with a 3-pointer for the Cowboys moments later.
A Brockington bucket got the Cyclone lead back up to three points with less than a minute left, but back-to-back turnovers by ISU allowed OSU a couple of more chances.
Clinging to a one-point lead with 11 seconds left, Tre Jackson calmly hit a pair of free throws, as the Cyclones took an 84-81 lead. OSU had two chances to tie on its possession but misfired on both attempts.
