LUBBOCK, Texas – No. 15 Iowa State (14-4, 2-4 Big 12) could not finish the season sweep of No. 18 Texas Tech (14-4, 4-2 Big 12) as the Red Raiders ran out to a 72-60 win over the Cyclones Tuesday night at United Supermarkets Arena.

Neither team led by more than three in the first half, and ISU was within one of the hosts with 17:11 to play, but the Red Raiders dominated the second half, building up a lead of as many as 23 points in the second half.

In defeat, ISU was led by Caleb Grill’s 17 points, which included three 3-pointers and was his first game in Big 12 play in double figures. Izaiah Brockington just missed out on a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds.ADVERTISING

Like the meeting in Ames two weeks ago, points were at a premium. The Cyclones had separate first-half scoring droughts of 3:28 and 4:17 in the first half, but the home team was unable to take advantage, running off just four-straight points on each occasion.

The visitors were still the ones doing the chasing, as there was 14 minutes between times having the lead for ISU, with George Conditt IV driving for a lay-in to put the Cyclones ahead 22-20 with 4:27 to go in the first. However, ISU only had one more point for the remainder of the half, with Terrence Shannon pushing through the paint for a lay-in in the final seconds to give Tech a 26-23 halftime lead.

Texas Tech get got the first lead of more than one possession at 29-25 with 17:34 to play and eventually strung together an 8-0 run that opened its advantage to nine at 37-28. While ISU was finally able to get some offense going, the Red Raiders were also firing, bring their lead to 10 at 40-30.

There would be no path back for the Cyclones, with TTU going on a 16-3 run that ballooned the advantage to 20 at 60-40. Tech’s aggression on both sides of the ball put ISU into foul trouble, with Conditt, Jaz Kunc and Robert Jones all fouling out with over six minutes left to play. Iowa State committed 28 fouls and 16 turnovers, compared to 18 fouls and 13 turnovers by Texas Tech.
