Highway 91 falls in C-6 District Softball Finals to Kearney Catholic

KEARNEY – The Highway 91 Cyclones Softball team was trying to make the State Tournament for the first time in program history on Friday as they went up against perennial power Kearney Catholic in the C-6 District Finals from Patriot Park in Kearney in action heard on 107.9 the Bull Friday afternoon.

It was best 2 out of 3 series, and the Stars won Game 1 5-1 and Game 2 7-2.

Game one was scoreless until the bottom of the 4th inning when Whitney Uelman scored on a passed ball to give Kearney Catholic a 1-0 advantage.

Highway 91 got on the board in the top of the 5th thanks in large part to a triple from Lilly Praest, who came in and scored on a bunt from Kennady Schmidt.

The Stars regained the lead in the bottom of the 5th as Krista Lee hit a solo homerun to put Kearney Catholic ahead 2-1.

The Stars added two more runs in the inning, capped off by an RBI Double from Pitcher Bralen Biddlecome.

Kearney Catholic added another run in the 6th as Payton Schirmer scored on an RBI Single from Lee.

Biddlecome picked up the win on the mound for the Stars, going the distance, and giving up just 1 run on 6 hits.

Jaedyn Ratlzaff took the loss for the Cyclones, giving up 5 runs on 6 hits.

In Game Two, Kearney Catholic got on the board first as Lee singled and scored in the top of the 1st inning.

Highway 91 tied the game in the home half of the inning as Faith Indra singled and scored for the Cyclones.

The Stars added another run in the 3rd and Lee singled and scored again in the 5th to put Kearney Catholic in front 3-1.

Ratlzaff homered for Highway 91 in the bottom of the 5th as the solo shot made it a 3-2 ball game.

That was as close as the Cyclones would get though as Kearney Catholic added 4 big insurance runs in the top of the 7th to seal the deal.

Biddlecome once again picked up the win on the mound, giving up 2 runs on 5 hits while Ratzlaff took the loss, giving up 7 runs on 10 hits.

Praest was 2-3 with a triple and a run scored in game one for Highway 91 while Lee was 2-2 with a homerun, two RBI, and a run scored for Kearney Catholic. Biddlecome went 3-3 with an RBI Double.

Ratzlaff was 2-3 in game two with the homerun for the Cyclones while Carleigh Eurek went 3-4 with an RBI Single and a run scored for the Stars. Lee was 2-4 with two runs scored.

Kearney Catholic improves to 29-6 on the season and advances to next week’s State Tournament in Hastings while Highway 91’s season comes to a close at 21-11.
