HASTINGS – Guardian Angels Central Catholic went 2-0 during the first day of the Class C State Softball Tournament at the Bill Smith Softball Complex in Hastings on Wednesday.

The Bluejays beat Freeman 19-11 in the first game and came from behind to beat Kearney Catholic 4-2 in the second game.

The GACC vs Freeman game was a marathon, lasting two hours and 40 minutes.

GACC scored seven runs in the bottom of the first to take a 7-1 lead.

Kearney Catholic added three runs in the top of the second to make it 7-4.

The Falcons then took their first lead of the game when they scored four runs in the top of third to make it 8-7.

GACC was able to plate a run in the bottom half of the inning to make it 8-8.

Then the Bluejays had another seven run inning in the bottom of the fourth, thanks in large part to a grand slam from Aubrey Kreikemeier and a two-run home run by Kiley Pojar.

GACC led 15-7 after four innings.

Freeman wasn’t quite done scoring, as they added three runs in the top of the fifth, and the GACC lead was trimmed to 15-11.

But it turns out the Bluejays weren’t done either, as they scored four runs in the bottom of the inning, making it 19-11 and ending the game due to the eight run mercy rule after five innings.

GACC recorded 18 hits on the game, with each batter recording at least one hit.

The second game was scoreless until Kearney Catholic plated two runs in the top of the fourth, taking a 2-0 lead.

The Bluejays answered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning, making it 2-1.

Neither team scored again until GACC took advantage of four Kearney Catholic errors and plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 4-2 lead, which would go on to be the final.

Livia Hunke had a pair of hits and two RBIs for GACC. Shelby Perchal added two singles and an RBI and Kayla Fischer had a pair of hits.

As a team, GACC recorded 10 hits.

Fischer struck out five batters and also recorded four put-outs defensively.

GACC advances to the winner’s bracket semifinals where they will meet Bishop Neumann for the fourth time this season. Game time is set for 7:00.

The game will be broadcast on 107.9 The Bull.
