OMAHA, Neb. — The Creighton softball team fell to Butler, 10-2, in the series opener on Friday afternoon at the Creighton Sports Complex.

The loss drops the Bluejays to 13-20 on the year and 0-7 in BIG EAST play, while Butler improved to 13-19 overall and 7-0 in league action.

After holding the Bulldogs scoreless in the first two innings, Butler erupted for four runs on just two hits and two Bluejay errors in the top of the third inning to take a 4-0 lead. A solo home run by Paige Dorsett opened the scoring, while a wild pitch and an errant throw allowed two addition runs to score. The Bulldogs added its fourth run of the inning on a fielding error as Cate Lehner came around to score.

Creighton cut the deficit in half in the bottom half of the third as freshman Ensley Frame led off the inning with a single back up the middle. She would move over to third on a ground-rule double by junior Cayla Nielsen before a double by senior Kailey Wilson scored the Bluejays only two runs of the ball game.

Butler would go down quietly in the fourth but extended its lead out to 7-2 with three runs in the top of the fifth. Monique Hoosen led off the fifth with a solo home run to left gave the Bulldogs a 5-2 advantage, before a double by Elly Boyer and a single by Lehner placed runs on first in third with only one out. Lehner then stole second and came around to score on a two-run single by Olivia Moxley, which gave Butler a 7-2 lead.

The Bulldogs pushed the lead out to 9-2 with two insurance runs in the sixth on an RBI single by Moxley and a bases loaded walk by Sydney Cart before a solo home run by Dorsett in the seventh secured Butler’s 10-2 win.

Wilson led the Creighton offense with a double, two walks and two RBI, while four other Bluejays recorded one hit as the team finished with five overall. Freshman Natalia Puchino (7-9) suffered the loss after allowing seven runs, four earned, on nine Butler hits with five strikeouts. Butler tallied 10 walks in the game while Dorsett finished with a pair of home runs.

Creighton and Butler will continue their three-game series on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. The Bluejays will be recognizing two seniors following tomorrow’s contest.
