A Burt County sheriff’s deputy has lost his battle against the COVID
virus. Burt County Sheriff Eric Nick says that Deputy Justin Smith
passed away Wednesday (July 28th) after advanced life support measures
were taken to stabilize and assist him during his recovery. Smith had
been with the sheriff’s department since December 2008, he served as the
police chief in Decatur, and was a member of the U-S Army Reserves.
Sheriff Nick says Smith was a devoted father and husband, he loved
serving his community, and he will be greatly missed. Burt County board
of supervisors chairman David Schold has requested all flags in Burt
County be lowered to half-staff. The funeral service will take place at
11:00 a.m. CDT Saturday, July 31, in the City of Tekamah Auditorium,
1315 K Street, Tekamah, NE. Prior to the ceremony there will be a
procession to escort Deputy Smith from the Pelan Funeral
Home at 310 S. Charde Ave. to Tekamah. The procession will leave
Oakland at 8:15a.m. and travel on Hwy 32 to Tekamah. The service
will include honor guards from Nebraska State Patrol and the Omaha
Police Department. The public is welcome to attend the service.
For those wishing to send cards, please send them to the Burt County
Sheriff’s Office 111 North 13th Street Tekamah, NE 68061.
Flowers and memorials can be dropped off at the Burt County Sheriff’s
office or the Decatur City Office.
