3 West Point-Beemer Boys Track Athletes sign with Wayne State

Wayne State College head track and field coach Marlon Brink announced today that 15 student-athletes will join the Wildcat men’s track and field team for the 2021-22 academic year. 14 of the 15 signings are from the state of Nebraska with the other signing coming from South Dakota.

“This may be the most talented and one of the largest men’s recruiting classes that we have ever had in my 21 years at Wayne State,” remarked Coach Brink. “I am really excited about the potential this group of young men possess with multiple state champions.”

Brink added, “We were able to get a good balance in almost all the areas to help our team…sprints, jumps, distance and throws. I think we have several athletes that have the potential to score in the NSIC immediately, which says a lot about the quality of their marks coming into college.”

“This group also excels in the classroom and over the years we have seen that the best students usually have also been some of our best athletes because they know how to balances their studies with their time spent training and competing,” said Brink.

Jesus Barragan, a sprinter from West Point-Beemer High School, was a Class B state qualifier in three events for the Cadets this spring in the 100-meter dash (12th – 11.24), 200-meter dash (14th – 22.93) and the 400-meter relay. In football, Barragan earned Class C1 Lincoln Journal Star All-State First Team honors at defensive back and helped the Cadets win a district title last fall and on the basketball court he set single season and career records for assists this season. Personal bests for Barragan are 10.91 in the 100-meter dash and 22.56 in the 200-meter dash.

Alex Brandt is a three-sport standout from Grand Island Northwest High School. This season, he placed sixth in the Class B triple jump (43′ 8″) and sixth in the high jump (6′ 4″) while also qualifying in the 300-meter hurdles. Brandt also excels in the classroom earning Academic All-State honors in track and field. Brandt’s personal bests are 15.32 in the 110 hurdles, 41.53 in the 300 hurdles, 6′ 6″ in the high jump and 43′ 11 ½” in the triple jump.

Daniel Elge is a thrower from Aurora High School Class B state qualifier in the discus (10th – 143′ 3″) and the shot put (11th – 49′ 9″) as a senior this season. He helped the Huskies to the Class B runner-up finish in football last fall and is an Academic All-State selection. Personal bests for Elge are 54′ 7 ½” in the shot put and 146′ 11″ in the discus.

Julien Hearn is a jumper from Neligh-Oakdale High School where he was a multi-sport standout in football, basketball and track and field. Hearn is a two-time state runner-up in the high jump, placing second in Class C this spring (6′ 6″) and again in 2019 as a sophomore in Class D also clearing 6′ 6″. He is also a two-time state qualifier in the long jump. Hearn was a Class D1 All-State First Team selection in football last fall after hauling in 67 catches for 1,417 yards and 16 TD’s as a wide receiver, leading the Warriors to a 9-2 record and two playoff wins. He was also an All-Niobrara Valley Conference selection in basketball and closed his career with 1,019 career points. Hearn’s personal bests are 6′ 7 ¼” in the high jump and 22′ 3″in the long jump.

Theo Huber is a sprinter from Kearney High School where he was an All-Heartland Athletic Conference selection in track and field this season. Huber anchored the Class A state champion 400 and 1600-meter relay teams for the Bearcats as a senior and also qualified for state in the 100-meter dash. Huber is a two-time Academic All-Conference honoree and a member of the National Honor Society. Personal bests for Huber are 11.09 in the 100 meters, 22.88 in the 200 meters and 51.79 in the 400 meters.

Dawsonn Lawver is a distance runner from St. Paul High School where he was a four year letter winner in cross country and track and field. He was a three-time state qualifier in cross country, helping his team to a third place finish in Class D as a junior in 2019. Lawver was an All-LouPlatte Conference selection in cross country three seasons. Personal bests are 5:05.31 in the 1,600-meters and 10:58.26 in the 3,200 meters plus 16:51 in cross country for 5,000 meters.

Jackson McIntyre is a sprinter from Central Valley High School. As a senior, he medaled in three events at the Class D State Track Meet, placing third in the 200-meter dash (22.92), first in the 400-meter relay and second in the 1600-meter relay. McIntyre was the Class D 200-meter state champion as a sophomore (22.42) and placed fifth in the 100-meter dash. Last fall in football, he earned Class D2 All-State First Team honors as a running back and linebacker and is an Academic All-State honoree in football and track and field. Personal bests for McIntyre are 11.13 in the 100 meters, 22.42 in the 200, 51.08 in the 400 meters and 21′ 6″ in the long jump.

Brandon Mitzel is a distance runner from West Point-Beemer High School, lettering four years in cross country and track and field. In cross country, he was a four-time state qualifier and medaled as a senior finishing 12th in Class C at 17:06. Mitzel was a two-time East Husker Conference champion in cross country and a four-time All-Conference selection. In track and field, Mitzel was a Class B state qualifier this spring in the 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs and was an All-East Husker Conference selection twice. He also excels in the classroom earning Academic All-State honors in cross country three years and track once. Mitzel’s personal bests are 4:41.57 in the 1,600 meters, 10:18 in the 3,200 meters and 16:38 in cross country in the 5,000 meters.

Logan Moeller is three sport standout from Pierce High School. He was the Class B state champion for the Bluejays in the long jump (22′ 6″) and the triple jump (46′ 2″). Moeller was also a standout on Pierce’s Class C1 undefeated state champion football team last fall, earning First Team All-State honors from the Omaha World Herald, Lincoln Journal State and Huskerland Prep and was selected to play in this summer’s Northeast Nebraska All-Star Football Game. Personal bests for Moeller are 22′ 8″ in the long jump and 46′ 2 ½” in the triple jump.

Wyatt Nissen is a sprinter from Boone Central High School where he was a football and track and field standout. He was a Class B state qualifier this year in the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash and earned All-District Second Team honors in football last fall along with Class C-1 All-State honorable mention honors while playing in the Northeast Nebraska All-Star Football Game this summer. Nissen’s personal bests are 10.98 in the 100 meters and 22.39 in the 200 meters.

Drake Peed is a thrower from Elk Point-Jefferson High School in South Dakota and will also play for the Wildcat football team as a lineman. Peed was the South Dakota Class A state champion in the shot put (57′ 11″) and the discus (167′ 8″) as a senior this spring. In 2019 as a sophomore, he was second place in both events at state – 54′ 1″ in the shot put and 145′ 7″ in the discus. Peed also excelled in wrestling where he was a two-time state medal winner and three-time state qualifier and was a two-time All-State First Team selection in football as a lineman. Personal bests for Peed include 58′ 4″ in the shot put and 177′ 0″ in the discus.

Isaac Richards is a standout distance runner from Skutt Catholic High School. In cross country, he was a three-time Class B state medalist that included state champion as a senior with a time of 16:21. Richards ran on three straight Class B state champion teams from Skutt Catholic and earned Super State Cross Country honors as a senior. He also finished seventh in Class B as a junior and 12th as a sophomore. In track and field, Richards captured a third place medal in the 3,200-meter run (10:03) as a senior and was 11th in the 1,600-meter run in a time of 4:37. He was also an Academic All-Conference honoree in both sports. Personal bests for Richards are 4:36.51 in the 1,600 meters, 9:58 in the 3,200 meters and 16:21 in cross country.

Edgar Rodriguez is a sprinter from West Point-Beemer High School. He was the Class B runner-up this spring as a senior in the 200-meter dash (22.22) and 400-meter dash (49.57) while also qualifying in the 100-meter dash (10th – 11.15) and the 400-meter relay. Rodriguez was also an All-State honorable mention selection in football for the Cadets helping the team win a district title as a senior. Personal best marks for Rodriguez are 11.01 in the 100 meters, 22.22 in the 200 meters and 49.57 in the 400 meters.

Wyatt Sindelar is a thrower from Grand Island Northwest High School. He was a Class B state qualifier in the discus this year (13th – 139′ 6″) and had one of the best marks in the state in the shot put this spring, fifth all-class at 56′ 4 ½”. Sindelar’s personal bests include 56′ 4 ½” in the shot put and 148′ 2″ in the discus.

Brody Stutzman is a thrower from Grand Island Northwest High School where he was a Class B qualifier in the shot put this spring, placing 10th at 50′ 1″. He was also a state qualifier in the shot put as a sophomore in 2019. Stutzman was also a three-year starter on the football team where he earned Class B All-State First Team honors as a senior at offensive line and had 67 tackles with six sacks and five forced fumbles with 11 tackles for loss while helping the Vikings reach the state playoffs all four years in high school. Personal bests include 50′ 1 ¼” in the shot put and 130′ 0″ in the discus.
