Two people have now publicly announced they have or will apply for the Nebraska U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Ben Sasse just after the first of the year. Sen. Sasse will be stepping down to take the reigns as President of the University of Florida on January 8th.
Governor-elect Jim Pillen has announced he will be accepting applications for the Senate seat until December 23rd.
As expected, Gov. Pete Ricketts announced yesterday he will apply for the seat. On Wednesday morning, Republican Melanie Standiford of Curtis announced she has applied. Standiford is former News Director of KNOP-TV and is now developing her own online media outlet called “Midwest Media by Melanie”.
In her statement, Standiford describes herself as a Christian conservative. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Leadership and a Master’s degree in International Security. She is pursuing a Doctorate degree with plans to “write programs for crisis management and recovery.”
She is pro-life and supports the 2nd Amendment. Standiford is also concerned with the nation’s prison system and crime rate and mental health in America.
Ricketts will be completing his 2nd and final term as Governor just after the first of the year.
