Kearney, Neb. – The 27th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney women’s basketball team held Chadron State to 20 percent shooting and got a double double from forward Shiloh McCool to roll past the Eagles, 71-44, Saturday afternoon at the Health & Sports Center.

UNK improves to 5-1 and now leads the all-time series with CSC (1-4) by a 59-13 margin. This was the Lopers final non-con game of the year as MIAA play starts Thursday night.

Leading the entire game, UNK held the Eagles to under 10 points in three different quarters. Overall, Chadron connected on just 11 of 56 shots (3 of 17 threes) including one made field goal in both the second and fourth quarters. The Eagles did go 19 of 22 at the line and trailed by just a 50-39 score in the fourth before a 11-2 Loper spurt put things on ice.

“In the first we were a little bit impatient and took some early shots we necessarily didn’t need to take. In the second half we took threes, we made threes (seven) but they were threes where we worked the ball around better,” said UNK head coach Carrie Eighmey. “If they are double teaming in the post you have to find ways to put the ball into the basket.”

Taking advantage of 18 turnovers and having a plus 13 rebounding margin, the Lopers saw McCool (Pleasant Hill, Ia.) continue her hot start. Making her first start in since 2019-20, she went 4 of 5 from the floor and 6 of 8 at the line to score 14 while grabbing 11 boards (nine defensive). This marks her sixth career double double and she is now shooting 71% (20 of 28) on the young season.

Having 20 assists on 26 made buckets, UNK also got 11 points from junior post Brooke Carlson (Elkhorn). That pushes her career total to 1,003, making her just the 27th Loper to reach the 1k milestone. She also is the first post player since Megan Becker (’11) to reach four figures in points. Carlson continues to work her way back from an off-season injury and logged 18 minutes off the bench.

“That’s where our advantage was … in the paint. We knew that going in and especially when they were in man, every time we went in there we were able to capitalize,” said Eighmey. “Shiloh and Brook both got good touches and then did good things with the ball.”

Finally for the Lopers, redshirt junior forward Maegan Holt (Council Bluffs, Ia.) had 10 points thanks to two threes with grad transfer and reserve forward Grace O’Neill (Boulder, Colo.) having seven boards, thee points and a steal in 11 minutes of work.

The Eagles got 13 points and eight boards from Ashayla Powers.

UNK heads to Emporia State (5-1) and Washburn (1-4) next weekend.
