 Tri-City drops overtime decision to Waterloo

KEARNEY, NE. – The Tri-City Storm dropped an overtime contest to the Waterloo Black Hawks by a final score of 3-2 Saturday night at the Viaero Center. Trevor Connelly and Jake Richard netted the Storm’s goals in the loss.

Aaron Pionk scored his tenth goal of the year at 13:18 of Saturday’s 1st period to give Waterloo a 1-0 lead in the matchup. The goal was assisted by Connor Brown and was the lone scoring play of the opening period. Waterloo outshot Tri-City 10-8 in the 1st period, and carried a 1-0 lead into the 2nd period.

Griffin Erdman notched the only goal of the 2nd period to increase Waterloo’s lead to two goals. Caden Brown and Owen Baker each recorded an assist on the play. The Storm outshot the Black Hawks 10-7 in the middle period, but trailed by two goals entering Saturday’s 3rd period.

Trevor Connelly scored a powerplay goal only thirty-two seconds into Saturday’s 3rd period to bring Tri-City within one goal of Waterloo’s lead. The goal was assisted by Jake Richard. Richard scored his nineteenth goal of the year at 10:35 of the 3rd period to bring the game to a 2-2 tie. The Storm outshot the Black Hawks 18-3 in the 3rd period, and Saturday’s game required an overtime period to determine a winner.

Gavin O’Connell scored his fourteenth goal of the season at 3:48 of the overtime period to give the Black Hawks a 3-2 overtime win on the road. Tri-City outshot Waterloo by a 36-21 margin during the game.

Cameron Korpi made 18 saves on 20 shots and recorded the overtime loss in net for the Storm. Jack Spicer stopped 34 of the Storm’s 36 shots on net and notched the win in goal for Waterloo.

Waterloo’s Gavin O’Connell was named the 1st Star of Saturday’s game. Tri-City’s Jake Richard and Trevor Connelly collected 2nd and 3rd Star honors respectively. 2,338 fans attended Saturday’s battle at the Viaero Center.
