KEARNEY – A big second half separated Gothenburg from McCook Friday night as the Swedes won 64-45 to advance to the Southwest Conference championship game.
Gothenburg outscored McCook 35-21 in the second half to pull away from the Bison. Both teams held leads in the first quarter, but Gothenburg used a balanced offensive attack to grab a late lead in the first and never trailed again. Despite turning the ball over 10 times, the Swedes defense played well, forcing the Bison to play uncomfortable all night. Wes Geiken led Gothenburg with 17 points. Boone Tederman scored 11 points and both Trey Stevens and Tra Rossell finished with eight points. Gothenburg knocked in four three pointers in the first quarter but would only hit two more the rest of the game. The Swedes were a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line. In the loss, Jacob Gomez-Wilson led McCook with 13 points. Bryson Gullion finished with eight points. McCook struggled from the free throw line, converting seven of 14 attempts.
