Gothenburg, Neb. — Peterson’s Supermarket in Gothenburg, a well-known retail anchor store in the community, is going to open a new store in a building previously purposed as a Shopko store.

Steve Peterson, one of the partners in the family-involved venture, said the new building is spacious and comes with a parking lot so patrons won’t have to drive around looking for a spot. Peterson said he’s aware of the challenge of opening a new store during the COVID pandemic, but he feels it’s a challenge they can meet…

Peterson said amenities in the new store will include wider aisles, expanded meat department, improved adult beverage and produce areas, fully stocked deli, fresh sushi area and much more. Peterson said renovating and outfitting the former Shopko has been a challenge, but fun too. Peterson envisions the new store as a new opportunity.

Several months ago, the Gothenburg Improvement Company assisted Steve and Ligia Peterson with the purchase of the Shopko building.

Steve and Blaine Peterson will operate the new store with the assistance of Steve’s son, Michael. The current downtown store employs 40 to 45 part-time and full-time employees with projections the new store could eventually employ close to 50 employees.

Peterson said they haven’t decided on a name for the new store which they hope to open this summer.

Steve said leaving the current location won’t be easy.

“It’s mixed emotions, leaving a place that you’ve been at for 60 years to do this, but it’s a real opportunity as we see it.”
