ELM CREEK – Down two scores heading into the fourth quarter, the Overton Eagles would find the endzone three times while forcing two turnovers, beating Elm Creek 38-28 Friday night.
Both teams scored touchdowns on their opening drives and both teams would also turn the ball over on ensuing drives in the first quarter. It was Elm Creek who would take advantage of two Eagle turnovers in the first half, scoring on both. Overton would also miss two field goals from 40 and 38 yards. Elm Creek would eventually build and take a 28-15 lead into the half.
The defenses would take over in the third quarter as neither team could score and drives ended in punts or turn over on downs. Still down 28-15 heading into the fourth quarter, Overton would then take over. The Eagles would score on a 30 yard half back pass for a touchdown to start the final period. Overton would grab an interception on defense and eventually turn that into a touchdown on a one yard rushing score to give the Eagles the lead. Overton put the game away for good late in the quarter after a turn over on downs deep into their own territory by Elm Creek. The Eagles would grab one more interception to seal the win.
Hayden Muirhead led Overton with three total touchdowns. He also had an interception and a fumble. Murihead grabbed two interceptions on defense. Dawsen McCarter would scored two touchdowns for the Eagles. In total, Overton’s defense would force three turnovers. For Elm Creek, Quin Oberg ran for two touchdowns while Jeremiah Shoemaker caught two touchdown passes in the loss. The Buffaloes would force two turnovers.
Overton improves to 3-0 with the win and will host Hitchcock County next while Elm Creek falls to 0-3 and will travel to Blue Hill for their next game.
