One dead in truck accident west of McCook

McCook, Neb. — The Red Willow County Sheriff’s Office was summoned at 9:51 a.m. on Wednesday on a report of a single-vehicle truck rollover accident west of McCook near mile marker 82 along U.S. Highway 6-34.

A dual-axle farm truck was eastbound on Highway 6-34 loaded with corn when the vehicle appears to have had a malfunction of a tire, causing the farm truck to veer into the westbound lane of traffic, roll onto its side into the north ditch, where it then rolled onto its top, spilling its load in the process.

The lone occupant of the farm vehicle became pinned inside as bystanders rushed to aid the driver. Fires started near the truck and others present attempted to extinguish the fire. Upon arrival, McCook Fire Department personnel did get the fire out, but the driver succumbed to his his injures and the fire. Red Willow Western Rural Fire Department and the Nebraska State Patrol also responded to the scene.

The lone male occupant of the truck, 48 year old Patrick Bryan Grossman of Hitchcock County, was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Red Willow County Coroner. Next of kin has been notified.The truck and grain were a total loss.
