Lincoln, Neb. — The summer travel season in Nebraska started on a deadly note with at least 16 fatalities over the past two weeks. Troop D-North Platte Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) Captain Tyler Schmidt says a number of music festivals and community celebrations are coming up and he’s asking motorists to do “everything possible” to buckle-up and to check their vehicles and campers/or trailers…

Captain Schmidt says, “We have Nebraskaland Days this week, a lot of our youth are going to be traveling as well to different sports camps and people taking advantage of our state lakes and parks, whether they’re towing and hauling their campers or trailers, their boats…(they need to be) making sure to check their tire wear and make sure the vehicle or transport is safe to be on the roadway and that includes looking at safety chains and lighting.”

Captain Schmidt and the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) urge motorists to obey traffic laws, always drive sober and avoid distractions. Captain Schmidt also urges motorists to be aware that “trailer sway” from winds and sudden movements can happen quickly and be very dangerous if not handled properly. There have been 96 traffic deaths in Nebraska so far in 2021, compared with 88 by this time last year according to the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety, a division of the NDOT.
