The National Junior Hereford Expo recently brought thousands of visitors from around the country to Grand Island, NE, on July 9-12.

The six-day event was held at the Nebraska State Fairgrounds and facilitated many youth contests like sales, public speaking, quiz bowl, future professionals, photography, beef cook-offs, and more.

In addition to the junior member competitions outside the ring, there were also extensive classes of showmanship and the evaluation of thousands of Hereford cattle in attendance.

Festivities ended on July 12th with the conclusion of the Owned Female Show. Other divisions of cattle competition throughout the week included cow/calf pairs, steers, bulls, bred and owned females, and more.

One of the crowning moments of Hereford Nationals took place on Thursday evening when three new National Junior Hereford Association directors were announced. Matt Bruns of North Platte, NE, was awarded one of these leadership positions and received a new maroon jacket which symbolizes the professional role the young leaders play in the Hereford cattle industry.

Adding to the significance of the moment, Bruns was given his jacket by Hannah Pearson of Oconto, NE, who was retiring from the board at the same time he was inducted.
