Lincoln, Neb. — The Nebraska Supreme Court has ruled that a ballot measure to repeal a new conservative-backed law funding private school tuition with taxpayer money will be on the November ballot.
The decision follows a long battle over the issue with public school advocates successfully gathering signatures this summer to challenge the law. Nebraska’s new law aligns with similar conservative moves in states like Arkansas, Iowa, and South Carolina which have introduced various forms of private school choice including vouchers and education savings accounts.
Tom Venzor, Executive Director of the Nebraska Catholic Conference, was disappointed with the court’s ruling:
“This decision hurts the children and families who need support the most—those facing hardships such as bullying, disabilities, or the unique challenges of military life.
Families already struggling to find resources for their children are now left with an uncertain future. As always, the Nebraska Catholic Conference stands at the ready to advance school choice programs for our low-income families and other families in need.”
