LINCOLN – The Nebraska Department of Transportation says 22 people were killed in 20 crashes on Nebraska’s roads during the month of May.
According to the numbers released this week, 12 of 17 vehicle occupants that were killed were not wearing seatbelts. Three of the fatalities were motorcyclists with one fatality each being a pedestrian, an ATV driver and a driver of a farm tractor.
Two of those deaths happened on the interstate with 11 on other highways and nine on local roads. Sixteen fatalities happened in rural areas.
From January through May there have been a total of 100 deaths on the roads so far this year, up from 75 in 2023. It’s the highest total through the first five months of the year in at least five years.
Drivers are reminded to do their part to help prevent fatal accidents by always driving sober, always wearing a seatbelt, putting phones down and limiting distractions.
