Dundy County, Neb. — A collision between a train and a semi in Dundy County in southwest Nebraska on Tuesday left one person dead and another injured. Dundy County Communications received the initial report of the crash near Highway 34 and mile marker 2 at 2:45 p.m.

The two occupants of the semi were ejected and transported to Wray Colorado Hospital for treatment.

The male driver, identified as Matthew Drinkwalter, 46, of Midwest Wyoming was then flown out to another hospital for further care. The male passenger, identified as Steven Drinkwalter, 61, of Casper, Wyoming, was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

The Sheriff’s Office says preliminary investigation shows that the semi was attempting to cross the tracks ahead of the BNSF trains’ arrival to the crossing.

The Dundy County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Haigler Fire Department, Benkelman Fire Department, Red Willow Western Fire Department, Benkelman EMS, Wray EMS, the Dundy County Roads Superintendent and the Dundy County Clerk.

The Sheriff’s Office says it’s an ongoing investigation.
