LEXINGTON – Two Dawson County foes split games Thursday night. The Lexington girls held off a late surge by Cozad to win, 45-37 and the Cozad boys also survived a comeback attempt by the Minutemen, 59-53.

For only the fourth time this year, the Lexington girls were able to get back into the win column by using a stiff defensive effort. The Minutemaids held Cozad to five points in both the first and third quarters while eventually building a 13 point lead. A 14 point first half from Sarah Treffer also helped Lexington. She eventually finished with 21 points while going 10-13 from the free throw line. Mia Rowe and Gracey Smith each scored eight points in the win. Cozad was led by Megan Dyer’s 12 points while Makaia Baker scored 10 in the loss. Lexington improved to 4-11 while Cozad fell to 5-11.

The Cozad boys used their size to dominate the paint all night and three different Haymakers scored double figures in the road win. Jacob Weatherly led the team with 17 points while converting 8-10 free throws. With a limited bench due to illness, Cord Chytka made the most of his opportunities, scoring 13 points. Nathan Engel also scored 12 points in the Cozad win. It was another slow offensive start for Lexington, but eventually the Minutemen would hit eight threes as a team in the losing effort. Dru Truax led Lexington with 12 points, all coming from beyond the three point arc. Four other Minutemen scored nine points in the loss; Daud Daud, Jase Carpenter, Kaden West and Isaac Scharff. With the loss, Lexington’s losing streak was extended to seven and fell to 3-12 while Cozad improved ton 9-6.
