The old wood frame building burned to the ground in March 1937 and, by fall, a new brick
school house stood on the southeast corner of the Gates crossroads. Area residents acted
quickly, in spite of initial disagreement. Contentious issues included building size and shape,
construction materials, and whether indoor plumbing was extravagant. Relatively modern
architecture and stout brick construction were chosen, but outhouses were deemed good
enough. Remember that it was the Depression era. Money was tight. People could afford to
carry progressive ideas only so far.
The brick school house served the district’s students well for several decades – even better
after restrooms and the gym were added. The facility serves well yet, as the Gates Community
Center. Even during this recent time of COVID concern, the Center has seen use, albeit less
frequently. For it to remain useful, however, we must address maintenance issues. The big one
facing us now is the need to replace roofing material on the brick school house.
We are exploring roof replacement options and have sought cost estimates from multiple
sources. While not all have been received yet, it looks like the cost will be near $15,000. Put
bluntly, we can’t do it without assistance. We are asking supporters of the Gates Community
Center to help us act quickly, before a leaky roof adds to the expense. But who says raising
money can’t be fun?
Mark your calendars. We are scheduling a fund-raising activity, for SATURDAY, APRIL 10, 6:00
pm (CDT), at Gates. The price of admission for each household is at least one item (baked
goods, craft item, gift certificate or other suitable article) for donation to a SILENT AUCTION.
So, to get in the door, bring an item to donate. Then see what others have brought, and bid on
whatever strikes your fancy. We encourage you to bring finger-food to share during the event.
Additionally, you can show off your skill by entering the CORNHOLE TOURNAMENT. The
entry fee is $10 per player. The grand prize is undisputed bragging rights, along with a refund of
the winner’s entry fee. All other proceeds from the tournament and the silent auction will go
toward roof replacement expense.
If you are unable to attend the fund-raiser, we welcome your contribution by mail. We are a non-
profit, service organization and your donation is tax- deductible. Please make your checks
payable to Gates Community Center, Inc. and send to the treasurer, Angela Burnett, 43790
Sargent Rd, Anselmo NE 68813.
Thanks for your support. We look forward to resuming our annual meeting and celebration in
June 2021. Watch for more information about that coming event.
