Corn, soybeans catch up after storm damage, late start to planting | Fridays in the Field

When Memorial Day approached this year, the Smiths in Portsmouth, Iowa, only had one field planted.

Fast forward to August, father-son duo Galen and David said the crops are growing well.

“We were trying to get a lot of things done before we started planting,” said Galen, the father. “And then all at once it started raining and then it didn’t want to stop raining.”

Galen said once they got started planting, it took two to three weeks to complete. Now, the crops have caught up.

“We’ve had quite a few heat units here lately. So, you know, they’re coming along good,” Galen said. In April, son David Smith said their farm dodged tornado damage but they had a lot of debris to clean up from the fields.

Learn more about the Smiths’ growing season in this week’s episode of Fridays in the Field. Fridays in the Field is presented by FNBO.
